A steel filament of the same diameter as silk will break before a filament of silk! Silk Charmeuse – Silk made with a satin weave which is soft, yet supple and drapes beautifully. The front side of the fabric has a satin finish, lustrous and glossy, and the back has a matte finish. This is the smoothest of the silk weaves. |

Let’s face it, silk has quite a reputation. The mere mention of silk elicits “oohs” and “ahhs”, and not because it is the softest, lightest and most breathable fabric on the market. Silk’s status is well deserved, and originates from thousands of years of representing wealth and power.
Silk is the centrepiece of countless myths and legends as well as real history, including lending it’s name to the most important overland trading route in human history, the Silk Road that linked the Far East with Europe for hundreds of years.

2)How Silk Fabric is Made
As with most things, nature outshines man when it comes to producing exceptional materials. Silk is one such material, and all natural fabric originating from the cocoon’s is the silk moth.
The process is deceptively simple, yet was held as a closely guarded secret in China for thousands of years. The art of raising the silk worm and harvesting its cocoon is known as sericulture.
Silk is produced by various insects, but by far the largest quantity comes from the silkworm “Bomby Mori”. This is the silk worm that feeds on Mulberry leaves and forms a cocoon of silk before pupating.
The threads from several cocoons are subsequently unwound together to form a single strand of raw silk. This fine thread is the basic component of all silk yarns and fabric. Weaving is the operation that creates the fabric by interlacing the warp yarns (lengthwise) and the weft yarns.
