WHO: New crown epidemic may usher in second wave or second peak

On May 25, local time, WHO held a regular press conference on New Coronary Pneumonia. Michael Ryan, WHO health emergency project leader, said that the second wave of the epidemic has not yet occurred, and is now in the first wave of the epidemic. According to data from Central and South America, Africa and South Asia, the epidemic situation is on the rise, and the actual number of infected people in each country is still relatively low. When referring to the second wave of outbreaks, it usually means that the level of the first wave of disease (transmission) has dropped to a very low level, but it reappeared a few months later.

Michael Ryan also emphasized that the new coronary pneumonia epidemic may suddenly rise at any time, and it cannot be assumed that it will continue to decline. There may be a second peak. Countries in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia should continue to take public health and social measures and monitoring measures. A comprehensive strategy to ensure that the epidemic situation continues to be on a downward trajectory and that there will not be a second peak immediately.

Maria Van Kokhov, technical director of the WHO Health Emergency Program, said that countries should remain highly vigilant and be prepared to detect cases quickly, even in countries that have successfully curbed the virus or experienced a decline in the epidemic. Studies have shown that most people are still susceptible to infection, meaning that if the virus is given a chance, it can lead to an outbreak. Maria van Kokhov emphasized that one of the characteristics of coronavirus is that it can expand in certain environments, leading to transmission or super-transmission events. This situation has been seen in many closed environments, such as long-term care institutions and hospitals, but Basic public health measures can suppress the spread of the virus.
