Modern printing methods such as ink-jet printing and sublimation printing are known as digital printing. In digital printing, an image is sent directly to the printer using digital files such as PDFs and those from graphics software such as Illustrator and Photoshop. This eliminates the need for a printing plate, which is used in offset printing, which can save money and time.
Without the need to create a plate, digital printing has brought about fast turnaround times, low minimums and printing on demand.
Instead of having to print large, pre-determined runs, requests can be made for as little as one print. Digital methods are being worked on at a fast rate to improve quality and lower costs.
Here is a brief introduction about two main printing types:
In this method, printing files are printed directly onto pro-coated / pre treated fabrics. It involves coating the fabric, printing, steaming to set the dye and washing the fabric to remove the coating and excess dye. The end result is a washable, colorfast print. This printing method is usually used for natural fabrics with active dyes, such as cotton, silk and linen fabrics.
In this method, the process involves printing onto paper first and then transferring the design onto fabric using a heat press. This is a printing process using heat and pressure to transfer prints from paper onto fabric. As the fabric feeds into the press, the high temperature opens the 'pores' of the fabric while the ink is simultaneously converted into a gas – skipping the liquid phase. This step allows the fabric to absorb the gas, and the 'pores' close as the temperature drops, resulting in the gas converting to its solid state. This printing method is usually used for synthetic fabrics with disperse dyes, such as polyester and nylon fabrics.
